Gold : PETROL : Platinum

Platinum : Gold : PETROL

The title says it all... but still there are finer aspects to this. The prices of fuel have now hit a mind blowing Rs 49.81 here in Chennai and an excess of Rs 51 in bangalore.
I happened to notice the breakup of fuel prices in NIC some time back.47.32 (petrol price in Chennai in INR)=19.64 (value at supply point) +14.86 (excise duty + edu. cess - Central Govt.) +11.91 (States sales tax) +0.77 (dealer commission) +0.14 (other charges)
Now i can understand the value at supply point but the other charges seem to make no sense to me. The biggest question to me is to where this money is going? I still am negotiating potholes (and all the other inherent aspects of Indian roads), i still am riding in badly lit roads w/o road dividers, I still am running on standard 87 octane fuel (sub standard in many other countries) …

I am beginning to wonder whether paying taxes is day light robbery. I have always heard that problems need to be addressed at the grass root level. But here its way below that: HELL, I would say.

6 Wierd Stuffs about me. !!!!!!!!

6 weird stuff about me... hmm, are there only 6? =))

well i guess im weird enough to know this much atleast..

Here it goes:

1) I have this utterly irritating habit (only to myself ofcourse) of virtually analyzing everything as I say it, like some second person sitting on top of my head, makes me lack sponteniety many a time.

2) I can be extremely lethargic to the point of not being able to lift my little finger and what makes it worse is the fact that I feel as if something is dying inside my brain because of the inactivity, but yet, I will not try and occupy myself !! This is something I have been struggling with myself with from a looong loong time (the worse since i started to work)...

3) I have a strange relationship with the Comps- if it is off, I won't turn it on, if it is on, I somehow act captivated by it, no matter what nonsense is running or playing and cannot turn it off!

4) I forget stuff that might have happened a day before, but will remember in intricate detail some weird little thing that happened eons ago, which no one else will be able to recollect.

5) Innocuos things that I may see and not really notice during the day will play a central role in my dreams when I sleep!!!

6) I'm atrocious about keeping in touch with people to the point of being non sociable but for no reason at all! and ironically if someone actually gets in touch with me, I can talk for hours on end without feeling any strain or restraint, but will lapse into being nonsociable almost immediately thereafter!

Think Small!

Wonder what the guy who came up with the phrase "Think Big" must be thinking right now. Thinking small seems to be the trend. Many thanks to my friend who made it possible for me to post about a gadget in my blog. The greatest advantage it offers me is that I don't haveto charge batteries for running the traditional mp3 player in my car. Am secretly hoping that it'd motivate me to start running in a treadmill and make me lose all those pounds I put on in the last couple of Years ;)

What am I Doing ??

Sometimes I wonder why I am living this life. Why do I have to work 16 hours a day, put up with unclean, noisy room mates, eat tasteless food and live away from home? Why do I have to live in constant doubt of my happiness? And why do I have to go on, blinding myself to all these ?

Yes, I agree I have to work hard, make sacrifices now so I can live my life later. But what happens to my life at the moment? I simply turn my back on it and start working..again. Why is it so important to please my clients when I am myself displeased, dissatisfied and frustrated? Money? Security? Job? Dignity?

Sometimes I wish there was no money, there were no rich, no poor. No literacy, no illiteracy. No happiness, no sadness. No light, no darkness.

What would it be to have such a life? Where everything is neutral. You simply exist without purpose, without reason. Living, moving things. In all directions, moving as though operated by a lever. No expression, no feeling. Existing for the sake of existence. Nobody is happy when a child is born. Nobody cries when his dear ones die. No marriage, no festivals. No bonding, no break ups. No fights, no reconciling. No love, no hatred.

That our eyes were made to see, not admire. Our ears to hear, not listen. The hands to touch, not feel. The soul to be, not live.

It's hard to imagine. Hard to digest!

I go thro' this everyday. At the end of it, I am thankful to whomever concerned.. thankful that I can touch and feel and see and admire and breathe and talk and express and most of all, live.

The truth is that we are so busy with life that we miss out on all the things that really matter? The truth is that we work hard now for the future but don't realise the present slipping away in front of our eyes? The truth is that we are so tied up by the rules of this world, this society that we fail to think any different ? Well yeah I have received many "FWD"s of this kind. But I think the truth is that we have been designed to think this way, to feel this way and to live this way. It's all a part of a design. The designer? We are all in search of the designer. I have to accept it and go on as life takes me. I have the liberty to make decisions, to decide the kind of life I want to have. But in the end, nothing matters. My past, my present, my future.. nothing!!

Okay looks like I totally messed up this blog! I am not sure what I wanted to write. I started at something and ended up sounding like a philospher! It's embarrassing to say it, but yes I am confused! ( I mean there's no time I am not!)

"Everything becomes clear in death."

Let me wait until then!

A Kindof Quote !!!

The universe is not hostile, nor yet is it friendly. It is simply indifferent. — John Hughes Holmes
This reminds me of the Balboa saying to his kid: " The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your kneesand keep you there permanently if you let it. But it ain't how hard you hit, its about how hard u can get hit and still keep moving forward. THAT'S HOW WINNING IS DONE "

The Diary of a Young Girl !!! Book i read recently..

The Diary Of A Young Girl by Anne FrankWritten by the young jewish girl who along with her family had to live in hiding for fear of being caught by Nazis almost for two years.Poignant narration of horror filled days during the 2nd world war is very touching. The growing up years of a teenage girl during 1940’s in the troubled times where Jewish people were butchered in the concentration camps by Nazis. Her relationship with friends and her parents are simply told with socio political backdrop of a teenager's understanding. She shares her dreams (she aspired to be an actress in Hollywood) ,talks of her little friendships with boys of her age etc .
The tragic death of this 14 year old spirited girl Anne Frank in Poland only recounted by witnesses and later recorded by her father who survived the camps proves that wars may be won and lost by nations , but the humanity is always a loser of such numerous young budding lives.

World around us (Working world) Attrition, Hikes and Happiness

World around us (Working world) Attrition, Hikes and Happiness

“If in another 6 months, I don’t get a transfer to x-branch of the company, I would quit.”
“There is no challenge in this job profile. I want them to put me in x-project, where work would be interesting. Else I would put in my papers.”
“They are paying only x.x lakhs per annum even to freshers… Company Y pays double that. If in my next appraisal I don’t get at least z.z lakhs per annum, I will join Y. In fact, Y has already made me an offer to pay my bond money also. Besides, I have three other offers also to consider.”
“Im getting the big post besides double pay comparing my current one.”
“I was betrayed by my boss, he showed no intrest in my appraisal.”
“If you dont make hay while the sun shines you probably are a fool”
“The market is so good nowadays all u need is to be a good marketer to sell urself out there ofcourse for greater price”

These are the kind of words one gets to hear from the younger software engineers. Not that Im old, but that’s the feeling I get when I talk to these people. I remember back in 2005 when I passed out, when the industry was beginning to look good, recovering from the 2000 dot com bust, my batch mates considered themselves lucky to get a job. It is not that we all were angels and never cared about the money, but I feel we at least give our jobs more respect than ‘I-sell-myself-to-the-highest-bidder’. And i had to choose between a job in a S/W firm and in my core field. All i did was that i chose what i had thought and held close to my heart. Not that i repent for that decision, but sometimes when uland up in the wrong place alienized by that culture you just cant regret urself later... for im still courageous enough toraise one day or other. I decided to hibernate myself today. But I'll rise on the occasion. The dormant volcano will eruptone day not until......But what adds insult to the injury is the negligent culture in the core industries. They call whatever they do as innovation. Whatever they get as an award of recognition. Whatever they run as R&D it goes on... But will they change ?? before the world changes. I feel as if they were isolated from the happenings around the world. They seemto be more primitive to term even a hint of Oldest technology as Technology of Today in worst cases tomorrow...

Added to the insult from the society for not being a so called software engineer !! where only S/W engineers are worshipped in this society for the higher pay and perks they get, all we get comparitively is peanuts... What do i call ?? am i getting underpaid or the guys out there are getting overpaid.. Well it all depends on the prespective you see. But the world out there is certainly changing... Inflation is getting bigger and bigger.. the so called imbalance in the society is getting wider... as a result call it whatever (Under/Over paid) the sufferer is ultimately the engineer who wages a lone war against the raising mobsthat woo for the S/w industries forgetting what they were taught all those 4 yrs... They finally endup in Bench, in doing some Testing andsome brainers as developers where they hardly know what they were doing. But the society respects him for the status, for the money he earns.Even the country respects them for the revenue they genrate..tor the tax they pay.. its all happeing as if the hell is falling... Im not blaming any software engineers personally.. for most of my friends are S/W Engineers.. All i argue is the fact of changing trend... Why none of us are ready to concentrate on the growth of industries as a future... They say chinese Industries contribute about 50% of GDP. But whereas in India only 12%.. perhaps they were not yet into IT/ITES...(of im not so good at this.. The figures may b wrong, for im not anBuisness man atleast).. For only the S/W firms to be blamed for the mass recruitment which were unprecedented a decade before.. They hardlycare for the branch you did.. all they need is a resource.. either to increase thier bench strength, for development or any other for that matter. But what fascinates me is that the socalled engineers who attribute themselves for hard work, lesspaid, stress etc., for they hardly have known the work culture that has been the very spirit of this country so far. They want to relax themselves for not moving from the chair for 6 hrs. Blessed iam for i enjoy working with machines at times.. ofcourse the scene at the ITES (CAD/CAM/Product design) too is changaning nowadays.. the Mfg.sector is swiftly moving into bases of technology hub outsourcing their whole projects all they need is R&D. Theres hell lot of ppl out there doing thecrappy things.. Thatz the mindset of todays industries.. they no longer need brainy engineers or masters or doctorates.. I suggest them, all they needis a guy who hardly finished his schooling.. he can do the job much better. Theres no longer room for creativity, innovation or improvement or whateverthey call. The country as such is moving into a doom of lazy pranksters... for the others are discovering new technologies we still work on our callcenters to nurture our fluency in the foreign language. Which is considered as a big status in this country. when will be change. We should catch wind before it rains... out there is the crop that we have sowed.. for it to grow or not to is in our hands...

I don’t think the young engineers alone are to be blamed. In this boom of software industry when every company is in need of a large number of ‘resources’ (I hate the term resources – makes it sound as if people are just another computer – maybe ‘talent’ could fit better), they have been blatantly throwing ethics to the winds, openly encouraging prospective recruits to just vanish from their current positions without any notice. That’s just once side of the story. The other part is that while on a recruiting spree, every company fails to keep track of its current workforce, often paying lateral entrants much more than the employees who had stayed on for many years. Thus, loyal employees too are forced to look for greener pastures outside the company. Also, most companies refuse to give proper raises during appraisal meetings– whereas, in resignation meetings there is a better chance of being granted a hike. While most IT/ITES companies are constantly whining about high attrition rates, had they spent half of what they spend on luring others to the company on hikes to existing employees, the attrition rates could have been better managed.

Again, the dreams and aspirations of the youth is very constantly changing – if my previous generation was happy buying a car/house in the mid forties, this generation is still not content buying every ‘kool’ gadget under the sun using their credit cards. If the nth batch was happy with x lakhs per annum as salary, the (n + 1)th batch is not content with x.5 lakhs per annum. Somewhere along the road to economic prosperity, we’ve lost the key to happiness. As my generation becomes increasingly consumerist, I wonder whether with many times more salary than our previous generation, we would be at least half as happy as what our parents were. Being said all these, lets think our future.. for its the motto of this genration to live life to its fullest for the moment, its not us whoare going to live here in this part of world of ours, Lets Heal our world.. and make it a better place for the generations to come. Think aboutthe dream of yours, ours as a country and the dream of great men like APJ, lets work together to make india a superpower, a economical giant,a technology hub, a peaceful harmony, and above all a wonderful destiny. For if u dare to dream you'll be delighted when u Destine there...

A Fool's Paradise

A Fool's Paradise

Being the 1st of April - The Fools day.. And if you guess iam gonna write about how the fools day originated, the custom, the best pranks played etc etc, Nope.... Im sorry. Iam not gonna to write any of it and the reason i say that is coz i myself do not know what iam goint to write. Hands on the Keyboard, Eyes on the monitor and the brain still wandering... Lost somewhere out there on the gaze of my mind... Thats the status message from me..

But pretty sure iam not going to write about the custom of the fools day because every fool knows that . Hold on a second.. I meant only fools know that..Why do we need to know that. That is the funniest question... ? On a serious note, life need not be so serious after all.. I know so many people who take life so so seriously, that i really pity them. I do it to myself also a lot of the times.. And then realise life is not about career, job, or money. Its more about living , helping, celebrations, family, friends , travelling, music and dance. There was this saying - if you want to achieve your dreams, wake up.. Scrap complete scrap..In worrying about the past, and planning our future, we sometimes forget to live the present..

Sometimes i wonder why do i think , and why do i need to think about my career one year down the line when i dont really know what iam gonna do today evening. Eccentricity you may say, but without the eccentrics, without the sardarji jokes our life would not be the same fun after all.. To me my life should mean variety - variety in the kinda jobs i do, new friends everyday, better relationships , lots of movies , lots of games, visiting lots of places, a feeling of getting up everyday charged up to go to office, a feeling of sadness that a day has ended and a sense of excitement that the new day is about to being , a sense of fulfillment making others happy. And hold on .. i suddenly realised, i dont enjoy any of them.... There is no space for my career, my job and money . Life is too short to worry about such things. iam not going to spend any of my time worrying about this...Do my duties dutifully and if i succeed, great ..And if i don't , well iam not bothered as long as i give my best shot..Success they say is a relative thing. Think the sameapplies to money and happiness too..

Lessons usually are learnt in the struggle and not the victory . And life lived is in the journey rather the destination. Andthe choice very clearly is between the journey and the destination. Journey to me looks more tempting !

Iam happy for that..Happy for myself not to set such materialistic goals.. Its a Fool's Paradise maybe, but a Paradise iam in.. And if you thought i did not make any sense at all, the piece was complete rubbish..well..i can just say ... afterall, im just anotherfool too.. Fooling myself...

You can win - If you think you can !!!

You will be what you will to be;
Let failure find its false content
in that poor word, "environment,"
But spirit scorns it, and is free.

It masters time, it conquers space;
It cows that boastful trickster, Chance,
And bids the tyrant Circumstance
Uncrown, and fill a servant's place.

The human Will, that force unseen,
The offspring fo deathless soul,
Can hew a way to any goal,
Though walls of granite intervene.

Be not impatient in delay,
But wait as one who understands;
When spirit rises and commands,
The gods are ready to obey.

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar - A Hero, a Villain or a Victim?

The man Who Dared to Dream when no one Could....

Sachin Tendulkar. No other name in Indian cricket arises as much passion and emotion as his. No one else in the history of the game has had to carry the burden of such huge expectation and demands like he has. In a country where cricket is more than a game Sachin Tendulkar has gone about his job with an unbelievable humility and has his feet firmly planted on the ground. For this alone he should be admired.

From the time Sachin made his debut as a 16 yr school boy the spotlight has always been focused on him. When he came into the team he was hailed as the next Sunil Gavaskar. Gavaskar for his part took great interest in mentoring his fellow Mumbaite, a relationship that continues even today. After he had made his mark in the away tours of England and Australia he has always been hailed simultaneously as both a hero and villain. No one in the history of cricket might have had his game as minutely scrutinized, dissected and discussed as Tendulkar’s. But what is he really? Is he really a hero who with his skills mesmerizes a country of 1 billion or is he an opportunistic villain who abandons the same people who worship him in the time of need? Maybe the answer lies somewhere in between.

Tendulkar’s skill has never been in question. His longevity and statistics alone are proof enough for that. However there is this raging debate that he hasn’t won enough matches for India in the past. There are two ways to look at this. If you look at his ODI career around the mid 90s to the early part of the millennium you can see that whenever Sachin has got a good score the team inevitably went on to win the match. This was the time when he was at his peak and he was opening the innings with regularity. In those days there was none more reliable than Sachin Tendulkar in the Indian team. Remember those days, when people used to turn off their television sets if he got out early. Whatever support he got from other team members were viewed mostly as a surprise. On those rare occasions when someone else put their hands up we were pinching ourselves with disbelief. Sachin was a one man army in those days. He made us forget that cricket is fundamentally a team game played by individuals.

We might argue that Sachin was not able to translate his good form or scores into test victories abroad. Yes very true. He was not able to. But we forget that tests are won by the side taking 20 wickets. It’s more of a bowler’s game than a batsmen’s. One look at our bowling attack and we can see why we never won enough tests abroad during Sachin’s peak. Baring Srinath there was no other fast bowler worth mentioning. Our best bowler then was a Kumble, a spinner. To win matches abroad we need atleast 3 good bowlers. I believe we would have won more matches if we had the current bowling attack then.

Another counter argument that might come up is that Sachin was never able to save enough test matches let alone win it. To a major extent this is true. Sachin woefully let down all and sundry whenever the team was in dire straits. But to say that he has never done so would be unfair on the man. Neither is it fair to say this was due to his ineptitude alone. Remember the test against Pakistan in Chennai when Sachin braving a serious back injury soldiered on to take us to 16 runs short of victory. We could have still won the match with 3 wickets in hand. We lost the match by a handful of runs. For argument’s sake one can say that he should have been there till the end. But the fact remains that there was no support for him from the team. There have been countless other instances where he has made centuries in a losing cause. There have been countless more when he has disappointed us. But pray tell me other than Dravid now which other Indian batsman has fulfilled his promise time and time again as many times as Sachin did in those days. He has an average above 54 away from home which few batsmen can boast of.

His captaincy is also subject to much ridicule. We tend to forget that most of the series that were played under his captaincy were away series. Which Indian captain before him has had success away from home? It is not until recently that India started changing its fortunes away from home. This is largely due to the new young breed of fast bowlers that we have unearthed. Tendulkar never had that luxury. He very often never received the players he wanted. The team that he took to Australia in 1999-2000 must have been the worst ever. Not to mention several of his team mates were involved in the match fixing scandal forcing him to quit the captaincy in disgust.

So why do we question Sachin Tendulkar and his ability so much? The answer lies in that Sachin has had the misfortune to be living in a media driven world. A world where every couch potato, who has never set foot on a cricket pitch in his lifetime, starts voicing their “expert” opinion for the whole world to hear.

He was projected as an icon by us because at the time of his prominence there was nobody else who could hold a candle to him. He was the sole beacon of light when there was only gloom and despair all around him. Now we criticize him because he is not the same player as he was. What did we expect? That he is a modern day Peter Pan? Yes he has aged. Yes he is not the same player as he was. But tell me is there any great talent out there waiting in the wings to replace him? Why then are we so desperate to make him pack his bags for good? Even today Sachin Tendulkar can give you a 75 ball 100 maybe a run a ball 60 in the ODIs. Maybe a century in the first innings every 3 tests. So what? It is still the same if not better than any greater talent we can conjure up. Not to mention his vast experience which is always an asset in tight situations.

People ask if Sehwag can be dropped why not Sachin. They shout at the top of their lungs that the selectors are showing double standards. Sehwag and Ganguy were tolerated and given chances after chances for more than a year before they were dropped. We cry for Sachin’s head if goes through a series without a century. Tell me, aren’t we the ones who are showing double standards.

Sachin Tendulkar may not be the greatest ever. He may not be the greatest now. But he can still give 3 more years of good cricket if not great cricket. Can’t we show a bit more respect to him and judge his performances objectively rather than by blind passion? The man deserver it for the 17 years of joy he has provided us. We as a nation need to treasure our heroes more because we do not have many of them and we definitely won’t get someone like Sachin Tendulkar for some time to come. So savor the moments he provides you because it’s not going to last much longer.
Like Balboa said in Rocky...
" The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your kneesand keep you there permanently if you let it. But it ain't how hard you hit, its about how hard u can get hit and still keep moving forward. THAT'S HOW WINNING IS DONE "
and he had done it time and again..
